I GREW UP SPENDING SUMMERS drinking grape punch and learning Christian hymns at Vacation Bible School. Onward, Christian Soldiers. This Is My Father’s World. We’ve A Story To Tell To The Nations. The words of those old hymns stayed with me. And I experienced and understood their heartfelt expression of man’s relationship with God when they flooded my memory—some two decades later—when I was divorced and lost my mother and both paternal grandparents all within the span of a year. GENERATIONS-OLD HYMNS tell a story from beginning to end, from lost to found. Dense, focused words that engage the brain and assert the soul. Words that encourage, heal, teach, and worship. Words that have been sung by generations of choirs before us. Lyrics like those written by Horatio Spafford: When peace, like a river, attendeth my say, And the lyrics of Isaac Watts: See, from His head, His hands, His feet, HYMNSCRIPT IS THE SYNTHESIS of my life-long enthusiasm for typography, photography, abstract art, and those rich old hymns. After immersing myself in the lyrics and melody of a hymn by studying commentaries and listening to many musical interpretations, I go to the studio and create with a mix of traditional and electronic techniques. I’m fascinated with building and arranging layers of color, texture, and type into a single form, and I love to experiment. The digital medium lends itself to many new discoveries and surprises. TIME SPENT IN THE STUDIO is an intensely personal expression of worship. I hope that the work will help you see traditional Christian hymns in a new light. To appreciate their heritage, to understand their relevance, to point you to the Savior. These generations-old words and melodies are not relics! They are crisp and bright and oh, so powerful!
I'm blissfully married and have two sons who also like grape punch. Most of all, I love the Creator, the Peace that Passeth Understanding.
